Noise from Under van

Post by pionte »

Ive just had the steering Geometry laser aligned, including Camber, Caster and Tracking.

This was because I have fitted -50 AVO springs and Bilstein B4 or B6 I forget !

Anyhow, the geometyr was out so the tech adjusted and all was good, I have only driven about 50 miles, last after another shake down run ( testing carb ) as I turned 90 degrees right at a set of lights there was a orrible noise from the LHS ( sounded like right under passenger seat ) It was like rubber being dragged across glass , I was only 1/2 mile from home so continued, nothing fell off...

As I reversed onto the drive, hard left hand down in reverse then hard right hand down forward followed by straight back, the noise returned.. It wasnt just when the van was moving, or at least didnt appear to be directly proportionate to speed and motion forward or back.

Tonight I jumped underneath the van and had a look, I checked that the tyre was clear of all points, It was ... only abouy 5 mm clearance to top joint though !

I took a look at all the bushes, what do you guys think about the ARB ? does it look like its unserviceable ? It looks like it could be moving along the roll bar , would this cause the noise ??

I did find I could tighten this nut 1/4 of a turn

would this have been undone to adjust the camber ? It was tight but Im a bit of a gorilla when it comes to tightening suspension bolts... tighter = better

would this cause a noise somehow.

lastly the drop link bush looks like it has/can move slightly, again a possible cause ??

any thoughts welcome :ok :D

Yeah didn't see it in wheels and tyres don't pop into this one much.
If it happens when not moving then most likely bushes. Did you slacken the top and bottom bushes so that they sit at the new suspension hight without being twisted? Yep the ARB bushes need replacing. The drop link bushes are going to move as the suspension is lower.

Oh , no I didn't slacken of the bushes then re tighten, would you recommend doing whilst the weight is on the wheels ? kinda makes sense , I think some shiny new ARB bushes will be on order.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. :ok

Hi guys, yes all sorted.... well in the end I didnt need to do anything.

As Big Herb pointed out to me, when i replaced the suspension I tightened everything up whilst the wheels where off the ground, the noise was just everything ' settling ' again once the weight was back on and the ARB was in the correct position.

A year on and all okay :ok
