Urgent Advice Please about main cooling pipe.

Post by haydn71 »

Hi All,
I'm in a bit of bother as we're off on hols to Wales in two weeks and last time we headed to the Gower, we made it to Swansea before breaking down resulting in an AA piggyback home.

Typically, with two weeks to go, we're leaking coolant!

The leak is from the joint where the rubber feed hose meets the plastic main coolant pipe that runs to the front of the van. I've removed the jubilee clip and rubber pipe to find that about 8mm ring of the plastic pipe has broken off. I've replaced the clip and reattached the rubber pipe but it still leaks. I am off to the local car shop in the morning to see what I can find to fix it but any suggestions of method or material would be great right now. My balls are at stake here.

Cheers, Haydn.

if the bit thats broken off is on the front to rear pipe, then the only real fix is new pipes. Brickwerks sell them in s/steel for around £200

T25 direct will have plasyic ones. You could cut off the old one neatlt and use s copper or stainless insert to dtiffen up the end snd then clsmp with a new longer rubber hose.....best to replace tjough. I dif mine with stainless pipes and its not s bad job.

Thanks for the replies.

I've just been out for another look and under torch light, that there's also a split in the side of the pipe. I guess that's where the coolant was escaping and why replacing the jubilee clip didn't work! Doh!

Problem with 2nd had pipes are people sell them even though the metal inserts are falling out of the ends. Result=back to square one and £££ wasted

Fit stainless and forget

I agree, but trying to salvage holiday fund too.

Can anyone confirm that the outer most pipe is the 'to' pipe, and that the inner is the return.

Cheers,H
