URGENT HELP PLEASE....

Post by BigSean »

Hi All -

Just had a call from my mate who is driving from Aberdeen to Norwich for the weekend.

He has a 1.9 Turbo Diesel AAZ.

One of the wires has come of the Alternator.... There are 2 wire, Red & Blue. The Blue has come off - his question - Will the alternator still charge if the blue is off?

I have No idea at all!

Many Thanks - he is at Berwick at the moment.

Thanks

Sean

if its wired correctly??????? then the blue wire excites the alternator to charge at low revs
so if its wired correctly then the battery light with not light up when the key is turned to the on position?
when started the red light should show the battery not charging?
over 2000 rpm the light goes out?
I think that the blue wire is grounded at the alternator, but the blue wire could be owt or nowt and have no effect on the above.

if im wrong then one of the smoke dwellers will be along to put me right :D

Sean, sorry I can't give an immediate answer but I can get an ACCURATE answer tomorrow. My son, (who knows 'stuff' ) is out of town and I can't contact him. Get back to me if you want me to ask him.

The blue wire tells the alternator to get excited - without it there will be no charging output from the alternator. Fine if you aren't going a long way and you aren't using any electrics but in this case it really needs to be re-affixed. A very temporary fix would be to bare some the blue wire and put it inside the spade connector to the alternator and then refit the spade. (assuming that it is the spade type) Should last long enough to get him down to the old country.
