Rust above front jack point - MOT?

Post by aec »

Just put the welder away after repairing lower N/S rear arch/ inner sill hole when I spotted a hole in the underside directly above the front O/S jacking point. The hole is about 1" diameter, but otherwise all around is solid, sill is good, seat belt mounting, step etc all good (it's generally a pretty solid van). I'm guessing water runs down the inside of the door pillar from somewhere, pools at the bottom and has rusted it through, but now a hole has formed and it can drain things haven't got much worse.

A few posts I've read seem to suggest that the front jacking point is not an MOT failure - I'm sure this would have been there for at least the last MOT but there was no mention... so perhaps thats right or perhaps he just missed it?

What's the definitive answer? Is an isolated hole here OK? If I have to, I'll repair, but I'd rather avoid that and just treat the rust, paint, and let the hole carry on draining water if that's OK :)

I thought that it was a MoT failure, close to structural member. Maybe, maybe not.
One of these needed: http://www.alanhschofield.com/ourparts/ ... 09253.html. I have just done mine but I made my own up.

Thanks for the supplier link, hadn't got that one.

It's not in the outer panel. It's not the outrigger either, it's above the outrigger in the "floor" panel.

Thanks

I don't think it's that bad... I'm pretty sure the surrounding area is solid.... but perhaps I'm not pressing hard enough....

Like a bogus doctor I did poke my finger up inside and have a little feel around, and the surrounding metal interally all feels nice and smooth. It can't be that bad, can it? I've had this van 5 years so I know it's not a recent tart-up job.
