DG temperature switch

Post by Hammerbus »

Help : my T3 is originally 2.1 litre injection, prev. owner stuffed a DG in. All sorts of shortcuts - he made a mess of it. I cannot find where the temp. switch of the manifold heating is, or: where should this one be ? It is not the temp. sender on the thermostat housing, cannot find it in Haynes, nor in any existing topics - ????

You don't say if injection was removed and DG was fitted with it's carb, but since you mention manifold heater I'm assuming this must be the case...
If PO has just swapped thermostat housing over from DJ to DG, you won't have a manifold heater switch in there, you'll still have the (now redundant) temp 2 sender for the ecu. There's 2 senders in the housing, gauge sender faces forward, temp 2 faces sideways (usually). Take out your temp 2 sender and replace with the switch (available from Brickwerks). Rewire as required (won't go into "how to" here, as if you don't know how already, perhaps you should take it to someone who does, as the PO should have... ).

Dear Asjimmo,
Thnx, I missed that one. It is a carb engine now. Found the temp switch (there are 2 on a renewed thermostat housing) and the wires from the one on the side ... go nowhere.
I will get them sorted out and connected. Thnx again !!

those wires go to relay No. 1 in the black box at the rear of the engine bay on a DG.
the relay turns on the heaters.
The sender on the thermostat housing turns the relay off at 87 deg C, otherwise the heaters will default on if they are connected to the relay.

As your van never had this loom I would suggest a manual operation, particularly on the manifold heater
