Engine tapping.

Post by mollucy »

Good afternoon,
My van has developed a very loud Tapping noise. Making it sound rather like an Aircooled rather than the 1.6td it is. I have looked on Wiki to no avail, So am hoping someone may have an idea.

Difficult to say without seeing it.
Have you got good oil pressure?
Try and pinpoint the noise with a stethoscope or a long bar and your thumb against the ear.
I suppose it could be a failed camshaft.....when was the last time the tappet shims were adjusted?
Vacuum pump issue.
Slack timing belt.
Failing water pump.

Thanks for your replies, The tappets were adjusted 6 months ago. It only seems to be happening when moving, No noise when idling or revved when sat on my drive.

Check your CV joint bolts, I have read of so many peoples vans on here losing all drive because of loosened CV bolts coming out.

This is one of those threads where a little more information is revealed on each post....

So if you can only hear the noise when driving it probably isn't the engine....

To be honest all we can do is make wild guesses ..perhaps a video clip would help.

I beg to differ, whilst its more likely to be the drivetrain, you will find ends tend to tap/knock whatever under some load, but we agree we need a bit more info "drip feeding" :rofl

Remote diagnosis is impossible without a story.
simply stating facts of what you think is relevant, leads us to a point where you are...clueless :D

Once upon a time, My little girl (who is 10 ) said to her mother (age irrelevant) "whats that tapping/knocking noise coming from the engine mummy"."I don't know said mummy we shall ask daddy when we get home".
But daddy was clueless!, So he thought he'd ask the nice people on CLUB 80 90.

The End.

so far we have
engine tapping,
no tapping from the engine on the drive
only taps when the van is driven.

do you want to add anything else?

if not I'll leave it at the drivetrain, specifically the CV joints, as said.

re story,
don't give up the day job

It turned out to be a Bolt in the Manifold, Which for whatever reason only seemed to Tap/Rattle when Van was moving.
Thanks for all your help it really is appreciated. (Honest). :ok
