strange exhaust question

Post by Gary.pb »

Ok, so i have a blow coming from the backbox of my 1989 water cooled t25. After closer inspection the backbox is shot and will need replacing. This is where it all gets a bit strange. I was just about to order the full exhaust system (as per link) http://www.justkampers.com/vw-t25-parts ... ooled.html.

However the diagram which showed the correct exhaust for my model was different. The exhaust I currently have is the same as indicated for fitment to a pre 85 watercooled. The van is a 1989 f plate and the systems appear to be completely different to what should be on my year van so I am now a little confused.

Is it possible that the van has had an engine change at some point for an earlier unit, or is my understanding of the exhaust system needed for my van completely wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Early and late systems can be used on any WBX engine because they are the same, your van would have come with a late system and someone has simply replaced It with the cheaper earlier one.

I have an '84 van with a later engine fitted but use the earlier system, only thing to watch out for If you decide to fit the later one is the engine mount has 'lugs' on it for the exhaust saddles to attach.

If your van originally had a late system then it should have the correct mount on anyway, if not you will need this to fit the exhaust.

If only the silencer is shot just buy an early one or a complete early system again.

brilliant, thanks a lot for that.

Presumably having the wrong exhaust system for the engine wont have any adverse affects on the running of the engine.

If not then I will keep it as it as and just change the backbox

No, the earlier system is more free flowing but noisier.
