1.6td JX to 1.9 AEF? (minus turbo)

Post by si macc »

Hi all,

My 1.6td jx may need replacing (still in process of working out if its best to replace) and looking at my options. I'm not too bothered about speed but a little more torque would be handy. Overall I want to be cheap and easy (don't we all....). I've been looking at the possibility of using an AEF engine as there seems to be loads around with relatively low mileage. I've looked around on the forums but can't find much info on replacing the jx with an aef. I've seen a few people who said it can't be done but can't work out if this is due to the turbo. I'm not bothered about keeping the turbo on the van. Was wondering if it's an easy replacement if I ditched the turbo in favour of a simpler engine setup?

Thanks in advance,

Si

It's not that it can't be done, its just that you need to source more bits if you're going from turbo to N/A. It's mainly that the manifolds will be different. I suppose you could use the manifolds that come with the AEF, possibly with a bit of body bashing to make room for them, and a custom exhaust. Or buy some CS manifolds. The crucial thing would be, whichever manifolds you end up using, to make sure the inlet is connected through a decent enclosed air filter to the snorkel tube to keep the noise down.

It would be good to have a decent thread on here on that conversion. Hint hint.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the indepth reply. I've been reading a lot of your posts about your conversion but sadly it's more for swapping out non-turbo engines. I'm really not sure what road to go down if I do have to replace it, don't want to go AAZ as my mate has said they're a pain and hasn't had good experiences with either. I assume the 1Y would be the same? It's a shame about the AEF as there seem to be quite a few of them around!

Hi ,The last time i took my car out the water pipe from pump exploded when i replaced this i then noticed oil in the water which i think means the head gasget is leaking . I think this would be a good time to convert my engine to a 1.9 AAZ if there is any one who can help me with this.
I live in Banbury oxfordshire.

You would do better to start your own thread to avoid confusion.
