Most Likely Location For Oil Leak?

Post by Gingermonkey67 »

Hi All

I am fixing up my 81 Aircooled 2 litre van. Been doing it for about two years now, but mainly focusing on the interior so far. Mechanically it is fine and drives well. Used on the school run every morning too.

It has always had a bit of an oil leak, nothing major. Very much a small, one drop leak under the centre of the engine area. More recently I have noticed that it dripping from at least 4 different droplet points now, making for a larger patch on my driveway!

It doesnt appear to be dripping onto the heat exchangers, as far as I can tell. So I am thinking it wont be the rocker covers? So does anyone have any ideas about the most likely other areas it may be coming from?

I haven't delved into the engine area yet from above, and cannot see any leaky bits due to the tin ware. So wondered if this was a common issue, and if it is anything to be unduly worried about (assuming I keep the oil levels up)?

Thanks all

Dave

Pushrod tube seals, rocker cover gaskets, oil strainer.

That based on my extremely limited knowledge of aircold engines.

Another vote for the oil pressure switch. - I know when it goes as I end up with oily spots all over the back of the van

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I will give the engine underside a clean with some gunk and have a look.

Is the oil pressure switch a quick fix?

Oil pressure switch is on the top of the engine, after laying under the van being roasted I looked from the top and saw the leak from it. You need a box spanner to undo it. About inch and three eights/35mm A/F ish by memory
Check the fuel pump drain pipe also.

Crankshaft oil seal is a candidate as well.
