Help - refill westy gas tank
Hello. I am about to set off on a long drive to Norway and I want to check/refill the LPG tank. I have an adaptor for use in UK. The thing is I have never done this before and I am really very nervous about messing around with LPG. I don't know how to do it, test level, do refill etc. all and any advice. Would be gratefully received. I am in Swansea btw? Thanks

make sure you know how to fit the adaptor...and that it does fit.
drive to the pump
fit the adaptor.
hook up the bayonet type fitting at the forecourt.
pull the trigger.
it will cut off when 80 full. (normally about 5 quid from empty.
uncouple the bayonet
screw back the cover
check the gauge reads around 80%
that's about it....not much to actually worry about.

I have got the locking cover off and checked the gauge . Looking at it, as the arrow is pointing down, it is either full, empty or broken. My money is on the last. Do I have to have the valve/tap to the left of the gauze open when I fill? I read something about looking for an overflow?

You don't touch any of the valves/knobs under there, just screw off the large brass cap, screw on the adapter (as tight as you can get it with your hand)
Pull off the LPG trigger and line up the pins with those in the nozzle end, twist clockwise to fasten, then pull the trigger lever all the way and lock it with the lever.
Press and HOLD the fill start button (you will hear the pump 'PUMPING'. Depending on how much gas was in it in the first place it might take anything from 2 to 30 seconds to fill...it will stop automatically! (remember your finder is still pressing the button).
Let go of the button, release the catch on the nozzle trigger (this is when you hear a load HISSING as it releases it's pressure...just for one second). Untwist the nozzle head, pull off the filler nozzle, unscrew the adapter, replace the blanking cap.
NOTE* most pumps are TIMED OUT! so if you take more than 1 minute from taking the nozzle off the machine it won't deliver the gas so you have to replace the trigger on the machine and start again.
Don't forget to hold the button in when dispensing the gas.

Re: Help - refill westy gas tank
As for the LPG gauge:
The long and short.. the outter gauge is operated magnetically by attraction.
The inner tank mechanism (behind the allen screws under the gauge) is an arm and float operating at 90 degrees through gears.
To explain the fault in simple terms....the metal float (which determines LPG height in the tank) is screwed onto the arm, this becomes loose and then leaks LPG passed it's threads filling up the float chamber so it is no longer buoyant.
The repair is simple....remove the mechanism, unscrew the float, wrap 'gas grade' PTFE tape around the threads and screw the float back on and tighten.
Plunge test in hot water (to see if air is getting passed the thread).....rebuild...FIXED.
I carried out a plunge test in hot water to see if any bubbles were getting past the threads..
Did mine 4 years ago...still 100% working.
