Help please!
I am in the process of replacing the silencer that was badly holed and noticed that there was a nut missing from the top of the rear LHS manifold (not sure what port number but it seems the worst to get access to!)
Ah....I thought that needs a new gasket and new nut fitted...well I went to put on a nice shiny nut on and the stud was loose, so loose that within a few seconds it came out.
the stud was only in about 3mm and it would appear there there is something left in the manifold and some bodging tw@t had just put the remainder of the stud back in
Is there a fix for this that a limited diyer can attempt or is it proper serious.
What would be the implications of just using 1 bolt, Its gonna blow from the gasket for sure.
Any advice appreciated

Re: Exhaust stud & the class 1 bodger
Only one way to do it properly is to drill it out and retap it or if its of centre and badly damaged a helicoil would repair it, one stud will blow the gasket quickly, sorry if its not what you wanted to hear.

I have only owned this van for a couple of weeks so is an unknown to me. I am guessing that the head can be removed but am reluctant to do this.
Is there anyway of drilling out this insitu? Or am I having a

It's so easy with the engine out
very awkward with it in to get an accurate drill out
But your saving grace is...
VW engines are ridiculously easy to remove.
they are removed as a whole, nothing removed but the bolts holding it in (4), and the pipes (2) oh and a few connected wires.
leave the heads on
you'll need a skateboard to drop it on

Best get myself a skateboard then
Now never having done this before, would I have to separate from the gear box and get engine away from the van or can I disconnect hoses, wires, Lower engine enough to get access and then jack back into position.
Sorry if its a daft question

two ways really
separate the box with it left in...
or drop the lot and undo the drive shafts and gear linkage
