my speedo has decided to pack up are there any tricks to find out wether its the speedo its self or the cable

It's usually the nearside hub cover with the square speedo drive, they round off over the intervening 20-odd years Remove the clip at the end and spin the cable by hand, if it turns the cap's knackered ... if it flicks the speedo it confirms the cable's ok.

Less likely but worth checking is the connection into the back of the speedo itself - there's a clip that moves. This is more likely to cause speedo fluctuation but can result in a total disconnect.
