uneven running

hi ive not done much to my 1.9 watercooled but i had a running prob when i got it the previous owner changed the carb and fuel pump but after fitting a new tank it was ok then was in the garage when we fitted new panels and painted then taking it home lost power and was smoking then died so today started checking and it ran not to bad but done compression test slight differances but not low plugs were new but very black still slight smoke on checking air filter which was new ther was a fair ammount of engine oil there is a slight miss on tickover and on the top of the carb it seems quite wet with petrol which was making me think that was why its rich any help please thanks
