Mine was fastened with clips on the inside.
And when you remove it you left with a recess.

This may only be applicable to late vans.

We welded a plate into the recess and then filled it.

The 'transporter' and 'Volkswagen' badges are held on with 3 pegs that push into plastic clips that in turn push into hole in the tailgate.

There are two way. One is to gently prise them off with something flat. 2nd method is to remove the tailgate door card and push the pegs from the rear.

I think the VW logo badge is held on the same why........though some late late vans had them held on with sticky tape stuff

Check out below thread if you are left with the 'sticky' badge adhesive.
