Advice and help needed

Post by all-at-21 »

Hi,
we have a 83 water cooled 1900 df engine petrol.

Brought him home Thursday drove great, (hours drive).
Went out yesterday afternoon, again driving great.
Got in him today, taking its time to catch then coughing and spluttering when starting. Drove it down the road and battery and oil lights came on at the same time, and stalling, every time i took foot off accelerator. Got it back on drive and it stalled as soon as i stopped.
also wont idle, have to keep foot on accelerator.
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

cheers chris

Hello,

Has it been off the road for a long while..

Bad tickover...may be due to an air leak on any of the vacuum hoses..Check none are perished or generally 'ratty'..

or even fallen off...

or.. if you've got 'hall effect' ignition, ... an intermittent fault in one of the plugs on the loom, (take off very gently. clean out with compressed air and electrical contact cleaner..

Anyway you'll be in for a couple of hours checking..

Cordialement,

Rather than us guess what you have done..... tell us.

Have you serviced it
plugs
lead set
distributor cap
oil
filter
air filter

this happened suddenly so it might be electrical
is it a solex carb?
does it have an anti dieseling valve (idle speed cut off)
is the autochoke working correctly
fuel pump
fuel delivery
carb jet blockage

don't just look at them and decide the component is ok...make sure. or you'll go round in circles.

Check fan belt is still intact, is it under pressure or very lose? Should be slight play/movement half way up fan belt with 1/2" play. Are the wires at the back if your alternator on tightly. Is there adequate oil in the engine.

does your carb have a fuel cut off valve.. if it does..remove it and see that it opens FULLY with the ignition on

I know its been said already but double check the idle cut off valve - screwed in properly and also the electrical connection is cleaned and secured.
