Hi all
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about why my 1900 petrol engine has started revving really high when I first start it. This has been happening for about two weeks now but if I dip my accelarator three or four times it goes back to normal revs.It revs as if I've got my foot flat to the floor. Thought maybe it could be some thing to do with my accelarator cable but could it be something to do with my carb? Cheers Adrian.

Yep, could indeed be cable and that has to be the first place to look before messing with anything else if this has only happened recently. Look in the engine bay and make sure the spring is actually allowing the cable to spring back firmly. Throttle cable could also be dry and rusty somewhere along its length or even fraying and about to fail. Check front end too!

Re: ENGINE REVS REALLY HIGH WHEN STARTING
VW engines on pierburg carbs have a fast idle mechanism to aid starting.
If you search "fast idle " there are lots of posts explaining this.
What you describe is quite normal
The handbook tells you to depress the acc. once and crank the engine without throttle, once you have ignition or it fires up blip the throttle and it will settle back to a lower idle speed.
As the engine warms it will return to normal idle (takes about 6 to 8 mins)

Cheers guys I will have a look at that today, hopefully I will get to the bottom of it. I tried a bit of wd40 around the accelerator cable connection lever in the engine bay but that didn't do much so will check the front end for wear on the accelerator push rod bushes and cable. Also how do you get the push rod cover off? Re: ENGINE REVS REALLY HIGH WHEN STARTING
Im also having a few issues, my idle speed has suddenly gone up and doesnt settle. I recently put a new fuel pump on, and a new dizzy. It started after the new pump tho. Bliping the throttle doesnt help, it just stays high. Anyone setting up carbs at this weekends stamford hall event?
