Autohome Interior 'Recommisssion' - Help Needed

Post by bjtm »

Hi All,

First post. Recently purchased 1988 Transporter Autohome conversion. Tatty but usable.

Issue I have is that camping electrics do not work, water does not pump and gas is not connected.

Everything appears to be present and correct. Guess ideally need to take to someone who knows of these things. Or just get someone with one to look at mine so I can get a steer. My camper knowledge is zip, but am willing to help self !

I am based in Reading. Any help would be appreciated as really keen to get up and running ready for festivals.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies guys, any guidance / tips would be appreciated.

Ok, for starters the electrics do not 'work' - i.e. plug socket does not work, interior rear spot light does not work, water does not 'pump'.

Fidge does not appear to come on.

Switch between main / leisure battery works, lights up when switched.

All driving related electrics work.

Gas not hooked up but gas cannister in place with pipes.

Water added to tank but does not pump (guess electrical issue as above).

Any ideas / simple thing I need to check / can do ?

Sorry if appear green but not sure where to start - I am sure could be something simple....

Thanks, Bryan

Hi Bryan

Electrics first.
Is the plug on the 240v mains hook up circuit. If so, it will only work when the van is plugged into a mains point via you external hook up point (under a flap on the side of the van). If it is, then check the consumer unit. This is a simple "fuse box" that is designed to trip out if things go wrong. Mine was in the front end of the side cabinet with the small sliding doors. The fuse will have a trip on it and potentially a "test button". Make sure the trip is in and that the test button trips it back out again. Mine takes quite a while before it will allow you to reset it after a test. You can get a replacement trip normally if you think it isn't working.
12V electrics. Fuses and earths first. Detach battery connections. The water and interior lights run off the leisure battery. There may be inline fuses around the battery for these items. Pull the fuses and check they look un burnt out. Check all wires are attached to the solenoid screwed into the battery compartment (any missing and the battery will not charge) Check the battery is working (put a metre across it/use a continuity checker/a couple of bits of wire and a 12v bulb) Check the earth strap is making good contact. Check the bulb in the lamp that doesn't work and change it if need be. The watetank is under the rear seat. Lift the seat and you will see a big black plastic hatch in the top of the tank. Twist it to remove it and you should be able to pull the electric pump out. Check the wires are connected to the pump and the foot switch on the front of the cupboard. Check you have current at each point so if there is a break, you know where it is. If it all seems good but the pump still doesn't work. Try connecting it across the battery to see if it is truly dead or there is a bad connection somewhere. There should be an earth lead from the pump screwed to the metal of the van by the water tank hatch. Check the earth is good

The glove box hides a lot of electrical items. Open it up, empty it and then detach the little plastic strap (rear RH corner - push up) that stops the box from flopping forwards. Fuse box is on the left above the glove box opening. Remove cover (2 screws) and check all the fuses are intact. Earths are on two roses screwed to the inner wing just up in front of the top left hand corner of the glove box. Give them all a good clean up with some emery cloth. If you see any spade terminal attached to the rose with no wires and/or wires hanging around not attached to the roses, they probably should be re-united.

Run out of time for now, but that should get you started.
Let me know what you find......
Cheers

Fridge won't light up iirc its a rm122 so 12v or gas. The 12v won't switch on till the engine is running.
