My new Elite recon engine

Post by egremontrusset »

Feeling pretty stupid having been sold a bit of a dud (1986 T25), and after much agonising, i decided to plunge headfirst into getting an Elite recon engine fitted by Elite in Essex. I had quite a lot of advice here as well.

The guys at the garage have been helpful and friendly. They picked her up in Leeds and towed her down to Essex with no fuss or complications. Work begins tomorrow.

Here she is before....

I will post again on Saturday with an update and an 'after' picture. I thought people here might be interested.

There a lot of duds out there. Was it a much loved family van that they were sorry to sell again? Good luck!

yes... apparently. You can see from the photographs head seals gone, oil leaking badly, the fear was that the studs could be corroded. The cost of repair was too close to the cost of a reconditioned engine. I just hope there are no surprises along the way... that's my real worry. Also the van needs body work... a distaster if i do nothing. A happy disaster if i can tour Scotland this summer. :D

Apparently (this is actually what was said), the last owner was a hippy free spirit type of person who died. he travelled everywhere in it. All over Europe. His grieving daughter tried to do it up but couldn't hack it so it stood in a Cotswolds garage for a year rotting. I had a hangover... I fell for the camper and the story. BUT... flies keep appearing in the van, like something's rotting somewhere - maybe the dead hippy story is true. I'd better warn Elite.

If I were you, I'd strip the interior out when you get it back to see if you can find the source of the flies and give it a damn good clean out. You'll then be able to see any internal corrosion as well (have a look through the rust section in the Wiki page it's well worth a read). Treat the rust as best you can until you can either do it yourself/get it done.

I've got a few patches on mine & for starters have cleaned out all of the arches and sprayed them with Dynax S50 just to try to do my best to stop any areas getting worse. Cleaning the van on a regular basis will also help :ok

I was sold a dud, it was sold as a 1.6td Jx. It was a actually a CR engine minus the turbo! That engine only lasted 5 minutes before it massively failed its now in the front garden rusting away.
I knew bugger all about T3s and learned the hard way!

I picked up another van ready for the scrapper with a JX engine, that engine is now being rebuilt, the scrap van had some nice captains seats which ill use in my van also it had quarter light front windows that open outwards which ill use, sliding door handle and I've sold some bits and pieces off it too, and it makes a great house for the cat when I'm out!

It's all fun and games!

I've owned the van for a year and a half and been nowhere in it yet but when the engine comes back from the shop she's gonna be great.

You may have been sold a dud but on a positive side when you get your van back you'll have many miles of happy smiles to get into. Things happen for a reason me thinks.
Proud owner of my 1.6TD JX '89 Caravelle, other wise known as -'that which is usually broke'.

Wondered how long it would be before a debate about Elite started...lol.

I'm with you faggie but I fear one of Marco's would have been more than double Elites prices for the reasons that are well documented on here.

I don;t mind you asking. I paid £200 for the camper to be picked up in saltaire in Yorkshire and driven to essex (250 miles?) . I was quoted 300 by a local garage...
