i just spent the morning (as a novice) replacing the bearings on my front wheels. All went well until it was time to pull off the disc. It seems that the race of the outer bearing had welded itself onto the spindle! I took a large chisel and hammer and smashed it but it didn't shift.
I think my options look like 1. taking it to a garage (which i didn't want to do) and getting them to angle grind it off then file down the spindle or 2. replace the whole steering knuckle and new disc and repair it myself.
Any other ideas??
Cheers.

Re: Bearings welded to spindle
You tried soaking it in penetrating fluid?
Also heat works - get it nice and hot with a blow lamp and try and tap it round, like you were twisting off a bottle top

WD-40? yeah I did.. well sprayed it a few times. But you can see how hard i was hitting it from the pic. Blow lamp is a good idea though.. I've got one for wall paper stripping in the shed that ought to be good. Thanks!
Re: Bearings welded to spindle
WD40 is not the stuff to use.You need Plusgas. That looks beyond plusgas though.

Re: Bearings welded to spindle
IF.....the bearing has welded itself to the stub axle as you say....the stub axle will likely be unusable anyway.
But
Give it a go.......chisel out the roller bearings and cage without causing further damage to the disc or stub axle..you should reach a point where the disc will pull off leaving the inner bearing complete with seal PLUS the outer bearing inner race, at this point you will have sufficient access for an angle grinder (try not to touch and damage stub axle whilst grinding).
Heat is not really the answer as it will damage the tempering on the stub axle.

Makes sense. That is also the advise from some nice folk in Wareham who run Kombi Classics. Cheers.

Yup....see if you can break off a piece, where the lip has chiselled inwards so there is enough space for the roller bearings to exit. I was VW factory trained, not that this is a recommended method or anything lol.
be careful....wear gloves if you can and a pair of goggles.
