Compatible calipers

Post by sciroccotune »

Hi all, hope everyone's vans are in good order!

I'm trying to sort out my binding front calipers and having found them badly corroded I started wondering if any other VW calipers would fit?

I happen to have a few mk1golf / scirocco calipers and some mk2 golf 16v calipers to hand, does anyone know if they are viable?

My van has early type calipers from what I know.

Cheers chaps

Realisticly would you fit car brakes to a heavy van?
The proper ones are relativley cheap still.

I would if they had been fitted to later vans etc or is any one knew that the piston area was equivalent.

You can fit the Girling G60 calipers by machining the front discs into hubs there are a few threads on doing this. Try the modified section.

Thanks for that mate, g60 calliper carriers are getting really hard to find these days - well for a good price.

I have found that I can get some new original calipers for £60 each or found a rebuilt kit at £20 a side but would need to source new nipples.

The idea was to use some thing I had in the shed as moving house and money is flying out the door at an alarming rate!

I actually found the original calipers just fine. Thanks again all

Brakes international are slightly cheaper but there's not much in it. It all depends if your calipers are re-servicable or not. Brickwerks do them at around that price too.

if i was re doing my brakes now i certainly would not spend my money on standard brakes , i would go for the south african ottienger style at the very least , or a custom build using the front discs as hubs the only problem with that is it increases the track by a few mm a side something i cant do due to the wheels i have fitted ,
