Coincidence?

Dash heater fan packed up some time last autumn but started smoking yesterday when garage fitted a new speedo cable.

Can't see how or why speedo cable change should affect the heater and/or breathe enough life into it to get it to smoke. Mechanic admits he did nudge the fan switch with his knee when working on the dash...so maybe there was a loose connection in the switch which then tried to work the fan which had seized due to non use for 5 months?

Anyway I've pulled the fuse for the fan so I shouldn't get the same problem again....

Sounds like the mechanic disturbed some wiring while fitting the speedo cable.
