Rock and roll bed - full width - which one?

Post by LesBleus »

Hi there
we pick up our new (well new to us!) T25 on Saturday...

it has no back seat currently and with three little ones itching to get going in it I think that is going to be one of the first jobs done! ...

have any of you fitted an rock and roll bed, which one to go for?

any advice/suggestions would be very gratefully received.

Thanks
Lyns

Hello again. Before people give advice you need to explain what model you have. Is it a westie or other type of camper model (which one) or is it a tin top van for example? What furniture has it got fitted at the moment/ A few photos would assist too.
:ok

Bonjour Lyns,
We have a 1990 Carevelle and I fitted a R&R bed from Just Kampers. It was easy to fit and works well. We wanted a full width bed and have found it comforable. It is topped with 4 inches of foam I bought from an upholstery shop near Bournemouth where we lived defore moving to France. I refitted the seat belts so I could carry passengers and it Passed the French inspection at DREAL in order to regester the van here. There are other makes available and I would think different people would recomend those. You pays the money etc.
Good luck and we may see you around on our travels. Kenny.
I don't know where I am, but I'm having a lovely time!

ooh sorry...so used to owning a T4 and people knowing what I have got!!...ok....I believe it used to be a multivan but it now has absolutely nothing in the back.

Ideally when it's done it will have a westfalia roof back on it for the kids, and a full width rock and roll bed for the back of the van so the three kids can travel in comfort. It won't have a camper interior we just want something that when we travel through France we can all sleep in the van at an aire...

So it's just a rock & roll bed we are after, but where do you get them from, was told Bluebird Customs, but when I got the one for my T4 (altho not the same type) i was told not to go for the bluebird one...

Let me know what you think please would very much appreciate it.

Thanks
Lyns

oh you live in France, you star that's superb!, very very interested in learning more....have looked at the r&r bed from Just Kampers so that's interesting. Have you had the seats upholstered? any recommendations? has it got three seat belts?

Thanks Kenny...where in France are you?

Hi Lyns,
We are in Normandy, half way down the peninsular to the left???
Yes it has three belts at the back, with a lap belt in the middle. We were near you last summer travellinr from La Rochelle to Pornac (a very nice town).
I bought some matterial to cover the foam. Firt I cut some plywood an inch or two smaller than the foam with captive nutts fixed to the inside to bolt the base onto the frame. This will stop them from moving when braking etc. The matterial was simply staples to the underside of the plywood with the corners folded like a NHS bed. If I need to remove the mattress I can unbolt it from the frame.
Hope this helps, Kenny.

Hi,
I had an adjustable width r&r bed from JK and I did one summer in it and removed it as I felt it was unsafe for children( i have 2). It wasn't rigid at all. That doesn't mean that their non adjustable beds aren't any good though. I sort of felt that I could break it with my bare hands which is not a good sign. I replaced it with a Devon bed but if I was going full width I'd definitely be looking for a Multivan bed.
Do a search on here and you'll find loads of info about fitting them. 3 kids in the back might be a challenge in terms of seat belts though. Good luck. :ok

I fitted the Bluebird full width a couple of years ago.
The constructions that came with it aren't up to much - but it went in OK and it's been good and solid ever since.

Only thing to add......to be on the safe side I added drop down legs at the front end as it flexed a little on the cantilever if you sat on the edge when it was folded out....
