engine replacement..an idiots guide

Post by richbrowning63 »

Hi,
I have a 1986 T25, 1.6d 4 speed and love the van to bits but I need more power for the hills. I was thinking of an replacing the engine, what are my options...can it be replaced with a 1.6td for example?
Also, anyone on here do the whole job...source a second-hand engine and fit it?

Really appreciate your thoughts and help.

My thought is have you read the wiki and searching in the alternative engine forum regarding alternative engines
Like the popular AAZ engine

Depending where you are there are a number of people who can source and fit a replacement.

Your options are many...and include

A jx 1.6 turbo d
An aaz as Kev has said....about 5 more hp than the jx but a fair bit more torque....or pulling power.
A couple of 1.9 d versions

And then your into 1.9tdi like the 1z,ahu,afn....loads more hp 100 to 110 plus.

In terms of cost / work required. The 1.6 jx or aaz are regarded as fairly straightforward fits.....I don't know much about the 1.9 s.....but the tdi is a bigger job due to the fact that ecu and wiring mods are required....as well as mounting mods in many cases.

Matching engines to gearbox specs is another consideration.....

Think i am in the same boat, i have a 1.6D very reliable but slow, read the wiki, just want an idiots guide if what to replace with eg jx, aaz hard to find or ahu easier to find but what needs changing?? Just want like me an idiots guide to how easy to change thus what you have to do to each engine or change before buying so i know what i am getting into? Am in France so everything is more expensive to buy second hand, so want to be sure before i buy anything and then i am sure what else I need to buy to install it?

Stop right there.

The van's on French plates? That may well make a big difference in the legality of the various options. IIRC, you can only do an engine swap with an engine that was available originally - so JX good, 1.9 bad. Anything else may involve paperwork/engine plate naughtiness.

Have an ask on T3Zone.com - French forum, they have a lot of experts on the local issues you'll face.

Thanks for the info and found the thread too.
I think it is time to sell my first born and buy a new van.

Cheers

Subaru - you won't want to drive anything else...
It's more costly than you think, especially once you are pulling 260bhp

My ej25 is only 165hp, and it's quite good, but I do have a hankering for and ez30 or 36
