JX head on an AAZ, will it work??

Post by torchy »

My AAZ head appears to be knackerred, following are the compression pressures

I've forgotten the cylinder configaration (where is number 1?, been fiddling with the WBX too much I think), Pressures as follows Number 1 closest to flywheel:

No 1 26.5 Bar 390psi
No 2 28.0 Bar 410 psi
No 3 25.0 Bar 360 psi
No 4 Zero, I could actually put my thumb across the injector hole and hold it there while turning!

Anyone know what they are supposed to be? I can't find the info anywhere, nor the cyl configaration, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

But they are more than 10% out between them so that's not so good for a start, I hav'nt tried putting oil in the cylinder to seal the rings as the engine is canted over and I'm pretty sure that would not work to see where the pressure is going.

Looking inside the injector hole (no 4) the injector seat has erroded/corroded and there is a hole in way of the glow plug. Looks like that's the culprit.

Does anyone know if I can fit my old JX head to this AAZ? At least that will get me up and running again fairly soon.

I would check ETKA but it's still not working.

Any thoughts anyone?

JX is solid lifter vs hydro AAZ, so oil/breather ports in casting are different, so no. Obviously valves are smaller on the JX but that's not your show stopper. May be other minor diffs also. Had an AAZ head here for ages but McGill had it off me a few months ago, soz.

Thanks Andy, yes it seems they are not compatible on a few points.

Have you had a search on here http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in the idi section look up franken motor . They are 1.9 heads on 1.6 blocks. I have had a 1.6 JX with a gtd hydraulic head before. Which worked ok. So what you want to do might be possible.

Thanks
I've got another AAZ now and going to drop that in but when I get the JX back I think I'll measure it up to the AAZ and see what it looks like.
Will post my findings later.
