We haven't bothered with any cleanser in the tank - just a good rinse through when we got it. We just regard the water from the tank as "potentially iffy", so don't drink it without boiling (and inserting a teabag) first. For teethbrushing, either the campsite's bogblock or bottled.

I use one of these in line. Ok not cheap but makes the water in your tank pure drinkable. I used mine for 3 years with no issues or illness. It tastes better then mains at home.

I use a Nature Pure in my Merc - I fill up from streams and rivers in the Highlands, only problem is it strips the brown out of peaty water. :) Never cleaned a tank yet so there may be some blind fish living in there as I pump it straight into the tank!

I've filled up from rivers as well. It's very good system.
