Gear box sump plug

Post by mike35 »

I went to change my gear box oil today, i sprayed WD40 on the sump plugs and left it for a while. The drain plug come undone easy but the one you fill up on the side of the gear box wont come undone, and when i try it seems as though its rounding off so ihave just left it. Have anyone had the same problem?

Everyone has the same problem - that's why the advice given is always check that you can undo the filler before draining the oil!

Mine was also a pain to get off lots of wd40 and good 17mm drive and it eventually came loose with lots of force with another spanner attached.n just make sure the filler comes loose before you touch the drain plug. Took patience force and lube think it is the wife before u start or GF be gentle and lube lots to get to play lots of foreplay then action and eventually she will come lol

You need to try plus gas not wd40. several applications http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0001P02RK/r ... B0001P02RK If it is rounding first thing to do is get a replacement before you remove it! Then you can look at options, maybe an imperial size that is just over size and hammer it home

Totally agree,

Also heating it up until you can just about touch it without it hurting, then holding an ice cube on the actual filler plug for a minute will help free it whilst you undo it.

^^^ whs Or use a can of freezer spray - invaluable for situations like this, with the nozzle you can direct it accurately to the plug.

Heat the aluminum around the plug with a small propane torch, it will work.
But be careful not to burn anything else
