how to fit an alternator..advice please
Hi folks,
OK I know the alternator is buggered as have done all voltage checks etc. And mechanic has confirmed. So i have ordered the alternator and having spent quite a bit on labour this month I want to see if it is easy to do it myself. It is for a 1985 watercooled 1.9 petrol. Can anyone direct me to a youtube vid, i have looked on Wiki but can't find a step by step instruction.
Cheers guys

Are you certain its not just the brushpack that needs replacing.it will be a lot cheaper than buying another alternator.

2 screws on the brush/reg pack to remove them (look for the thing with a black circle on the back with 14v written on it ).

Still struggling and have given up for tonight....could you tell me please, is the brush pack a part of a new alternator or is there a possibility I will have to buy a brush pack even after the alternator has been replaced? I just need some knowledge for dealing with the mechanics on Monday so they don't take advantage of "the little lady" lol
I really apprecite your help on this Ian.

It belongs on the back like below. A new alternator will have one in already.

Re: how to fit an alternator..advice please
As above, you just need to undo those two screws (flat blade screw driver). Safety first..take off the positive battery terminal from the starter battery. On a petrol engined van this is situated in a box behind the drivers seat on a right hand drive vehicle.
In order to have enough room to get the screwdriver on to the screws, you may have to undo the alternator adjustment bracket, slip the belt off, then swing the alternator up and out..you should then be able to get the screwdriver onto both the screws obstruction.
Lefty loosie..anticlockwise to remove the screws, slip out the old brush pack, replace with the new, rebuild, retension the belt, replace the pos battery terminal.
