New 2.0 Aircooled needed
Its official my engine has died, after crossing my fingers the verdict came back as "the effing thing is effing effed".
So here's my first question, do any of you know where I can get a reconditioned engine, or very good condition turn key engine?
My second is how much will it normally cost to fit said engine, the VW specialist I took it to has quoted £400 plus any extras needed, he also quoted £2000 to source, fit and guarantee a reconditioned engine, I have since seen one on ebay for £1300, so I think he is having a laugh at my expense.
Do you know of any companies that will deliver and fit an engine? I live inbetween Bristol and Bath.
Thanks guys
Mark

Ok so is this mechanic who is yanking your chain about fitting an engine the same one who's diagnosed it to be shagged?

Yep, what's actually wrong with it? and if you have got an original engine you would be better off getting that rebuilt than an amalgam of second hand parts that are a reconditioned engine.

I have no real idea what's up with it, I am back at sea and the missus took the call, something about the pistons? And yeah it's the same guy giving me the quote who diagnosed it as being shagged.
How much are we looking at for a rebuild and how long, I have a trip planned for mid February

Re: New 2.0 Aircooled needed
Could do with just a top end rebuild if its just the pistons and barrels and piston s can be had for not much money ,so I would suggest and many others on here would I would imagine is take it to another garage that know there beans and get another quote.
Maybe some one one here could suggest some where?
Good luck

Wasn't there someone on here the other day advertising completely rebuilt engines for about £1200?

Re: New 2.0 Aircooled needed
Diagnosis time, in short not good!!
Cylinders three and four are blowing oil, possible causes are a hole somewhere in the piston or lining.
On the flip side the tow to the garage and the checking to see what was wrong only cost £30.
Thinking is now to source a reconditioned engine and get him to fix it in, at least that way when I get back from sea in a couple of weeks the van will be ready to go!!

Re: New 2.0 Aircooled needed
Your thinking like a bloke wanting a quick fix and hang the expense
That fella in the workshop must have your trust.
I gather then the engine is out and the problem shown?
Damaged/holed piston? Cracked barrels?
I would guess it needs no more than a set of rings and a bore hone

I agree with Kev here.
I would definately get a 2nd oppinion, sounds like the 'mechanic' just want a quick buck

Why does this bloke assume the worst?
I hope he did a compression test (wet and dry) to tell if this "blowing oil" is not valve related and therefore just a head problem?
