Standard or Aftermarket exhaust... (2.0 CU)

Post by Kelvyn »

The time is near to have the van converted to LPG, and the twin empi's have not survived well through autumn/winter.

I reckon I have two realistic choices.

1. 2nd Hand standard exhaust.
2. Exhaust System, Single Quiet Pack, 1700-2000cc, for Bus / Camper / T4 engine (Empi) - I could then maybe junk the box at a later date and replace with a bike can.
3. Stainless steel (out of budget)

Are the single quiet packs any better than the dual?

Any thoughts for Aircooled exhausts - not that many type 4 exhaust headers about to buy and use with a bike exhaust....

2 I'd say. Ever since I penned mine in the WIKI a few years ago, lots are doing it now. They run better and sound better (arguably) but do note that the resonant frequency can be around 30mph - is on mine. Yours may or may not need some degree of rear apron reshaping to accommodate the header but even with that minor inconvenience, its still an improvement on a stock exhaust and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Have old exhaust just removed from 1989 1900cc.

You are welcome to take it if you want. Couple of rust holes on rear pipe but could be repaired.

Depends what kind of towbar. Pics would help. Have a towbar on mine and its nowhere near silencer.

unless you have a seriously tuned bus a stock exhaust is fine and flows well up to about 100bhp.

the rusty empi you have on actually robs power.

the only thing worth doing other than a stock system is go see turbo thomas (google him) for stainless j tubes and one of his fab systems.

this will ditch the power robbing heat exchangers.

IMHO save wasting your money on wanky exhausts, put a stock system on and go save for a pair of 36 or 40mm drla dellortos, you will be glad you did it

H iI have an EMPi 2-tip exhaust on my 84 T25 watercooled. On the off-side the exhaust manifold pipe has rusted away. But I am a little lost as to what happens with the hot air pick pipe? Where does it connect to and with what? Any advise would be appreciated.

Just noticed its a whopping £334 to replace the lot. Heck, if mine goes I'll have each bit made up out of stainless. I like the early layout but not enough to pay £334 for one that will just go rusty. Seems like daylight robbery to me.

Hi CovKid, As your van is very similar to mine with the same engine. Would you be so kind as to send a couple of pics of your exhaust (Off-Side) and Off side section of your engine? I know its a lot to ask but it might help me hugely.

Bin the Empi crap and get a real exhaust. The hot air pick-up gubbins is unneccesary in our climate (yes, even this year) so buy the cheaper 2.1 exhaust system

Hi Ian, Thanks for your reply. Have looked at the standard exhaust and they all seem to have the hot air pick connections. Do you suggest just leaving them vacant?

The 2.1 system is exactly the same as a late 1.9 but doesn't have the warm air sleeve and is therefore cheaper.
