E10 and E15 ethanol containing fuels

Post by HarryMann »

Ok, this is from the US, but fuel here phase separates these days (anyone here with a Hoonda Quad, expect a sticky needle jet if left for more than a month)

No Hondas but have a pair of Suzuki quad runners....one 2wd and one 4x4...sort of classics now as they are 87 ish.

Ones in bits...think they would be quite at home in the back of the sika.

Carb gunges up quite happily anyway!

Float chamber needle valves stick closed it seems, been told this is evry common with today's fuels, didn't used to be of a problem, now in as little as a month fuel phase separates and ethanol dries out or corrodes certain parts.

Have had this twice on a Honda Quad, quite a new one too, otherwise its as reliable as the sun coming up

Oddly enough I have a 300cc Honda Big Red here that was rescued from my ex's house last year. It had been in a shed for about 5 years. I took it home checked the oil and jump started it. Started first time to my surprise using what was in the tank. I drove it around the house during which time the internals of the exhaust system disintegrated and the brake master cylinder blew its seals as I tried to stop.

The only time I have seen fuel go off and be unusable was in a boat with a diesel engine ....

:rollin

Met a bloke the other day, who spit-roasted and two-pack sprayed his Mini Cooper 'S' body shell in his kitchen diner (nice big sliding patio doors)

Can't have been as dashing as Syncropaddy though, because he didn't finish the story by saying he'd then driven it into the airing cupboard to dry :|

There has been much talk about this of course (some on here iirc). It seems there is lots of evidence of the Ethanol damaging various rubbers, plastics and even metals (brass in particular). If / When I winter store a vehicle, (my 59 Matchless 650 for instance) I make sure it has no Ethanol content in the fuel. Fortunately many of the larger filling stations sell 98ron "super" or "premium" petrol that do not contain Ethanol. (The exception is Shell V power that does )
