Usually its a bad earth, cracked fuse or more likely, a bad connection somewhere behind the fusebox.

Try a different hazard switch.

Yep, or the connections to it, particularly if the dash has been disturned for an reason.

Cheers for the feedback, the dash has been disturbed by previous owner as fuel & temp gauge isn't working either so going to try and sort it all out, problem is wiring/electrics isn't one of my strong points so advice is much appreciated

If you are lucky, fiddling with the long white connector on the back of the dash pod might bring the fuel/temp gauges back to life. A bad connection here is often the culprit (check wiki for more info).
The hazards will be a separate issue - if the indicators work fine on both left and right, then the problem can only be either the hazard switch itself or the connector to the hazard switch; check the black/white wire (if the left lights don't work) or the black/green wire (if the right lights don't work) at the connector that connects to the hazard switch - its possible that one of these is lose or corroded. (You may find that pulling the connector off the hazard switch and pushing it back on again may fix it)
