Change from 1.9 To a 2.1 Wasserboxer?

Post by VW T25 Feuerwehr »

Currently have an original 1984 1.9DG engine converted to LPG by gassure.

It now needs replacing - should I replace like for like and buy a recon 1.9DG or spend a little more and go for a recon on 2.1?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Lots of people on here are running 2.1 engines on DG carb and manifold with LPG , the main issues you will have will be with the early cooling system but if you change everything over from your DG inc early water pump it should be OK. Be aware that the 2.1 engines have an oil cooler though so you may need an after market oil cooler take off and pipes and oil radiator from somewhere like 'demon tweeks' or look up oil cooler kits on the bay of flees. Parts you'll require for a standard 2.1 oil cooler that's if you buy a short 2.1 engine ..

Oil cooler itself is available from GSF (same part as a MkII Golf/Scirocco 1.8 injection)
Hose .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118
Long pipe Housing to Hose .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118
Short pipe Pump to Hose .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118
Hose .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... uct_id=714
Hose .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... uct_id=715
2.1 Stat housing .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118
Stat housing top .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... uct_id=986
Stat housing fitting kit .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ct_id=1391
Stat .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118
Temp gauge Sender .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118
Fanimold Heater Switch .. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=s ... ory_id=118

The only thing not on that list are the various clips, the short straight 1/2 hose from the pump spigot to the short pipe and the longer than normal oil filter threaded center.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your quick replies.

Really good to have the parts list, it certainly puts some idea of cost to it.

Is there an advantage to making this change? And then what's the disadvantages of making the change?

A 2.1DJ running a DG carb with the carb lpg conversion is the most reliable and powerful combination of standard parts you'll find. We've run this set-up for 4 1/2 years now and it's great.

Others will say swap to a TDi conversion or a Subaru ...

is this still posible with the early cooling set up or would you also need water pump to stat housing metal pipe and later cross over pipe etc plus hoses to the cooling tower unit ?

You need a 2.1 waterpump, the engine bay bleed ring and all the hoses from the engine to the bleed ring, the thermostat bypass metal pipe and hose, the distribution tower behind the bulkhead, hoses from the front>back rad pipes to the t/stat housing and the dist. tower ... Allegedly some people have/are running 2.1s on early cooling systems (Shepster ?) but I cannot comment on how their system meets up and works.

The thing to remember is that the bare block engines are the same.

I seem to recall once chatting with Steve Shaw about 2.1 engines and he said all I'd need on my early cooling system was an oil cooler

That's correct, as Ian has stated it's better to fit the entire late cooling system if possible but if not you can run all the early stuff just add the oil cooler.

I've done this with mine and it's been fine for over 3 yrs, what you will need are the 2 specific metal oil cooler pipes and their hoses in order to plumb it in.

Mine also runs on LPG so is identical to the first posters query.

My van has a 1984 1.9 DG, which needs replacing.

Have now got a complete 1990 van with a 2.1 petrol engine in it (I assume its a DJ).

How easy is it going to be easy to just swap the new engine in?

PS. the new van appears to be in very poor condition, worse than my old one. So I'm not going for the simple option of replacing the whole van...
And its too high to fit in my garage... Plus, I'm kinda attached to the old one

It's the same engine.. fitting is the reverse of removal.
You take it out whole..(exhaust ancilliaries and every thing)

swap all the ancills and exhaust over

fit it.

drive it and grin like a cat
