battery and cables getting warm part 2

Post by 87diesel »

hi all,

As some of you will know i had a problem in the last couple of weeks where the battery was going flat after a couple of hours and the battery and cables were getting warm. (see link below if you missed it).

https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=110339" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just bouncing some thoughts around at the moment to see what anybody might have to say, below is a list of events so far and what my next steps might be.

1. Battery goes flat twice and cables get warm

2. Find draw on battery from glowplugs, with burnt relay and melted wiring and a piece of wire for a fuse, suggesting someone has had fuse blowing problems. Also found copper strip that supplies glowplugs touching body of one glowplug.

3. Moved strip away from glowplug body, replaced wiring, relay and correct fuse and away we go.... for a day. Relay switching off as it should.

4. Check functionality today, relay not switching off, fuse not blown, wiring after relay warm, relay hot.

Following some information I have found, I'm wondering if the glowplug that had the short has burnt out from where the previous imbecile had replaced the fuse with wire. The relay has put up with it for 8 or so starts and now it's had enough again. Any thoughts welcome.
