Fan/blower doesn't work anymore.

Post by eric »

Hello all,

Long time no post ... hope you are all well.

Tried to use the the fan to demist the front screen the other day for the first time for months, but found it did not work on all three speeds ... just dead.

I have searched `wiki` with no success but found Covkids masterclass in the tech section.

The problem I, or rather the autosparks chap who is decending on me later this morning, is that it seems the info given by Covkid and others refer to an `ordinary` T3 (pardon me please) and I'm wondering whether it would be relevant in any way to my 1987 T3 2.1 DJ Caravelle Syncro?

Is there any way the sparks can check whether the motor is definitely blown (therefore necessitating in getting a new one from the Baxters) without taking out/apart the dash? Doesn't seem like according to Covkid, but then, his wasn't a creme del la creme Syncro. (cue for name calling and abuse ... ha ha ha).

Thanks everyone for any help and guidance given.

Eric.

2 points =

1) = The "spark" can very easily check this = it is a simple case of putting his meter (he does have one i take it  ) between the live feed wire on the back of the switch (the full speed wire, not the 2 lower speed wires ;)) and earth = no reading (Ohms) means it is open circuit and likely blown, I say "likely" because there is a slim chance it is a broken feed wire to the motor, a duff earth connection (you still have to strip the dash to get at that) or sticking brushes.

2) = There was a recent thread on here by a Syncro owner how sorted his blower motor out himself, can't find it right now, but he would know what is different on a Syncro (not much I suspect)

Ghost, thank you very much for that info and the sparks did exactly what you had suggested .... result is a new one required.

Once again thanks for your prompt advice.

Many thanks for your link Pete .... I'm now having nightmares ... horrific ones!

When ordering the new matrix from Baxtereens place I learned that even the master takes 4+ hours to fit a new one, with, I may add, another knowledgeable person assisting. My bloke will have just me with a cardboard tray thingie which I will attempt to fashion over the weekend to place nuts/screws/washers/bits of fingers etc., as they come off the job which will commence with gusto(?) on Monday.

I don't know whether this is a good sign but my auto-sparks has never worked on one of these animals before but seemed quite cool when confronting the tangled mass of wires establishing the original one was u/s.

Silicone has been mentioned within your 2010 sterling effort ... can you give me the heads up as to what one to ask the experts in B&Q for? You also mention `tank straps` ... what on earth are those?

Finally (for now) does anyone have any idea what this malarky is going to cost me in the coin of the realm?

Hi Eric,

As far as silicone goes - any cheap clear silicone will do. You just need to keep the nozzle hole small so it doesn't get everywhere when you run the bead around the join.

Don't worry about tank straps on this one! They are the straps that hold your fuel tank in place and, I'm led to believe because I've not done them yet, are the final part of any Syncro owners induction. Your fuel tank sits above the transaxle so you can imagine how hard they are to get at.

I've not a clue how much this will cost - not knowing how much your guy charges per hour. What I do know is that when Hotpod came round to give me a hand everything came together very quickly. It is a job that looks worse than it is and needs patience and care so that nothing is missed, particularly when its all going back together.

A final thought is that you mention the word "matrix" in your post above. I'm taking that really you mean blower motor. If you are replacing the heater matrix that's a whole different ball game. You don't need to get the matrix out to replace the blower.

Let us know how it goes.

Been there myself too... I could hear my old one give a knock as if it could free up but only on speed one, it would blow the fuse on speed two!
I tried all kinds of beating hoping it would free but when it's dead it's dead!!
Having got the old one out it was siezed solid... One day it worked another it didn't.
It has to be the worst job ever..... Good luck!
in too deep to quit now....
