Vacuum hoses

Post by lloydy »

Im doing a pleasingly cheap job on the van and replacing all the vacuum/boost pipes (3mm-4mm not the big ones)
Diesel syncros also have the BIG vacuum pipe from the vacuum pump (which is syncro specific) its a cloth covered pipe. Does anyone know the internal I.D. of this hose, thinking I might as well replace it while I'm doing the others.
Cheers

Ooh! Yes please, I need to know that too, mine looks in tatters, though it could last years...have heard of one going though, a few years back. The pumps certainly can pack up too... always worth having a spare one of those.

The ID will be what fits securely over the barb on the vac pump, which I shall measure later.
If we measure the ID of the end of a removed hose, it will presumably come up as larger than when new, or if we cut through its middle, but we can estimate it pretty accurately.

12mm id 3.5mm wall thickness, the original stuff is still available at £26/m  N 020 390 1
washing machine hose is a cheap substitute
the original often goes porous as the steel internal reinforcement rusts out causing pinholes, very noticeable issue on 1.9DGs as one bank will be running lean, adjust the mix to get the CO right and fails mot on HC as one side is now running rich and HCs twice permitted

better tight than loose, maybe.... the silicone is pretty stretchy, but 13mm would fit with a jubilee clip

Washing machine hose is no good for automotive use.
It ideally needs some form of reinforcement so it doesn't collapse under vacuum.
The front to rear stuff is polyamide (PA12) from memory.
Weve tried getting some reasonable price stuff but failed, hence us getting SFS to make our others.
Does ETKA give a length of the Syncro ones (not near a computer) as if it.does I can ask if they can make some syncro ones for us.

Woven-sock reinforced silicone has buggerall stretch! That's why it was developed for HD applications like on commercials and motorsport.

Overdo it and it will either pop off with depressing regularity (you've been there Lloyd) or just split without warning; all assuming you've managed to cram it over the fitting in the first place... It's nothing like as forgiving as trad. reinforced vulcanised rubber hose.

You should be able to get vac hose through any proper auto accessory shoppe (not Halfwits, think CAF or local independant)
