Bit vague me at times...yes a Golf Syncro has a proper VC with silicone oil in...it's at the back and no diff lock, but does have a freewheel lock, Haldex can be substituted but needs major ish work to the drive train...
Well yes Audi do use the now but used touse a Torsen diff in the quattros.thats gears not fluid...Haldex is the modern electronic syncro option, used a multiplate clutch, fitted by Volvo as well, only 4x4 when required so no tyre wear issues, fitted on the T5 too.
4motion is Haldex, syncro is VC....passats had both at one point around 1998ish.....what best..? Well VC has one moving part really, Haldex has hundreds.
In fact the t5 system is just a big golf system...but I do see to recall the only one I have driven had a diff lock at the back....belonged to a electric company and was a bit worse for wear...by no means as robust as a t3
Volkswagen would use Haldex Traction clutch system on their "4motion" transverse engined cars. For longitudinal engined cars, they would use a Torsen differential-based 4WD system or lockable centre differential instead.

My Passat has the Haldex
Nope...the passat is a syncro...with a VC at the back and longitudinal mounted engine up front....3B passat..
Maybe....the point I'm not making very well is that a 3b passat syncro has a VC, and a 3b passat 4 motion has a Haldex....look the same, drive similar...but the syncro is maintained free, the Haldex needs oil and filters.
Hmmm...I maybe wrong....the 3a passat is VC equipped but the 3b one has a bigger gearbox so must have a Torsen diff inside it.....next time I see one I will have a look.
