How do I get a warranty for a respray (or works carried out)

Post by ScienceBoy »

Hi all
So our dear Harry has now been fully resprayed. As long as the weather's OK for the next day or so he should be ready for Friday. All great? Now here's the rub.

When I tell the good lady wife, she asks about paying by card to ensure we're guaranteed (£100 ensures the whole transaction is covered by the credit consumer act apparently). Well I don't know if the guy has a card machine. We'd discussed cash. He's a two man band. But it is £1300 plus the £300 deposit we paid up front. Ok that is a lot of money to pay out based on a recommendation and it looking good right now (obviously there will be a lot of examination on Friday anyway). I did get him to sign a form against the list of work to be carried out...

So does anyone advice on getting guarantees and warranties for work carried?

If he gave you a price based on cash then cash it is .... respraying a 20-odd year old vehicle isn't what the act was made and besides proving there to be an issue in a court of law may come down to a matter of opinion.

Perhaps you should have discussed the terms youd agreed with the missus BEFORE having it done.

You can't really give a warranty with paint.
You could just have a quick blowover and any rust etc can be back through in 6 months. Hence no warranty.

Unless of course you have had a major resto getting rid of all signs of rust/corrosion the same stands. But at the price you have stated I will be highly surprised if it was a full resto.

Whenever a trades person does a service such as a re-spray, the job is regulated by the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982. It has to be carried out "with reasonable care and skill". If the job hasn't been done competently, then you have come back. Down load a leaflet from the office of fair trading. I would write more but I'm on my phone and my finger aches!

And the problem there is that a resto or that type of work is subjective, ie; who decides how long each and every area will last , its not like mechanical work etc where a part is changed, the only folk to get fat in these circumstances are the solicitors.

id agree with micky on this, tho if your having a full exp resto (which your not) id say youl have a bit of comeback, the courts would view its a old van(unless there doing something that the court would deem unroadworthy ie dangerous.) so if your expecting never to see any rust etc dream on.,and buy a new van there approx 45k+.Sorry
We should all start to live before we get too old. Fear is stupid. So are regrets.
