I think it cuts the supply to headlights, fog lights, heated screen and other accessories when you crank the engine.

Yep. The big black-with-yellow-stripe wire that feeds many of your fuses is the one that gets switched off while you crank...

(Pre-1985 fuseboxes, anyway.)
