hook up

Post by dbz864 »

just going to start putting a 240 volt hook up in my van,was going to buy a kit, but it looks cheaper to but a consumer unit from screw fix and buy the bits from elsewhere. What size would anyone recomend for the 2 mcbs(think thats what there called)thanks

Up to you really. Mine has two mcb's; 6A and 10A. Smaller size does the feed to the Zig and the single socket for the 240v side of the fridge. The 10A one does the socket over the kitchen unit for kettles, electric heaters etc but it depends on what layout you have. You're limited to 16A max via the site hook up point anyway and there's no reason you can't run a radial socket circuit all round the van on one 16A mcb and forget the other mcb altogether. Best not to exceed 16A total outgoing device(s) just in case the site hook up's 'iffy'. And you know the incoming switch has to be a double pole 30mA RCD rated at 16A or over. Latest wiring regs require the mcb's to be double pole too.
Or you can fit an incoming double pole RCD switch that also provides overcurrent protection as well as leakage current protection thereby dispensing with any mcb altogether. Up to you, but if you don't understand what I just said get someone who does

Some sites limit their hook ups to 10 or 6 amp (sly barstewards) so demand your money back in that case, just because they are "rated at 16 amps" doesn't mean they'll let you draw that much......

Seems ok. Don't know the manufacturer (other than the enclosure). Ask for yours to be fitted with 6A and 10A mcb's though so the total is 16A rather than 6+16=22A; or just run a sockets radial off the 16A and fit a blank in place of the 6A. You could just leave the 6A in there disconnected but then some bugger would use it eventually.

Dunno if you could source individual bits yourself cheaper or not though.
