Ok so do you have a leisure or aux battery?
Is your van a factory conversion?
which one?
Is there a "leisure/main" power switch?

We could go round and round trying to find out what's causing your odd problem.
When the simplest answer is to directly wire it to the aux battery, takes about ten mins.
pull the radio out with the tool
identify the power wire...usually red with a fuse.
run a wire from the battery under the mat up behind the dash to the fused wire you identified..

bingo.
