Can anybody recomend a cheaper alternative stove other than a smev. Im after something with 2 burner rings and preferably with a glass lid but i dont like the look of the prices for the smev units. Im currently faffing around with a suitcase style one but im in the process of building a removable kitchen pod an would like something a bit more permanent.

I can flog you a Spinflow 3 ring hob and grill combo (and a sink and pump too if you want one) that I removed from my van prior to it being removed and dismantled following a fire. The unit works and has been scrubbed clean. There is no lid however as the table formed a cover over and worktop. PM me, if you are interested, with an offer - they are taking up room in my spare room.

It's known variously as a Coleman Renezvous, and also a Coleman Exponent, or Exponent Renezvous.
Looks like an interesting package. It took me a while to track one down that was actually on sale, and that was on the US Amazon site. Costs about $220, which works out to about £140, but it would cost a fair bit to ship from the US, as I can't find anyone in the UK who sells them. According to the reports, it works well, but is a bit heavy.
A good idea though, and useful to refer to, if you're building your own version.

I'm in the process of building a unit that can be easily exchanged for one of my buddy seats depending on my needs for each trip. I'll try and post some pics of my progress. It's not going to be particularly big but I'm hoping to get my cool box in the bottom then a 4.5 kg gas bottle a few pots/pans washing up bowl etc in. Oh and said stove in the top. Iv managed to find a few alteratives to the smev but unfortunately there still expensive if bought new. Looks like I'll be doing a lot of watching on eBay.

Heres a few pics of my progress. Just done the main carcas for now out of some materials i had lying round. The gap in the botom is for my coolbox to slide into so it doesnt slide around whilst driving.





You may need to turn your head 90 degrees coz i cant get them to rotate.

Just added a shelf to separate coolbox part from top. On the shelf will be my gas bottle on one side and a storage cupboard on the other. Just got to do the top, front and back now, Gonna be using kitchen work top for the top with a stove sunk in, A piece of furniture board for the front coz that'll be the side you see most of, and a piece of mdf or ply for the back. Ill be covering the sides and back panels with sticky back vinyl to make the look a bit more atractive and also easier to clean. Oh and im going to use a curtain on the bottom half of the front so that i dont have to contend with big doors when accssesing the cooler.

Just fitted my worktop, picked it up for under 20quid from a timber yard and they cut it to size for me too. Also fitted some curtain wires to the lower half. Just need to do front and back pannels now. Photo taken in my van for added effect:)

Nearly there now, just need the stove and its done. Unfortunatly im lacking in funds at the moment so im stuck using a portable one for now. Off for a few day surf trip next week so ill get to see how it is.

It's clamped in to the same point that the buddy fixes too. In and out in seconds.

What about a secure gas container - or even a gas vent?

The gas bottle is secured to the unit, and as for a vent I have 2 sliding windows along side the unit. Also have a monoxide alarm fitted for my propex.
