Hello, thought i was at the end of my conversion. The bloke doing the wiring for me had the engine starting on the key and it was running nicely but since he's tidied up the loom and reconnected it the engine will fire but cut out 1-2 secs later. An auto electrician came to have a look for me but is unfamiliar with vw's, but did recognise the injection pump to be a bosch edu pump and said that the ecu has an immobiliser programmed into it which will need to be removed. The engine came from a golf mk3 but i was not given the key, surround or black box. The date on the ecu is '95 and is part metal part plastic. I've spent a long time trawling the internet to try and find a solution and a couple of hrs today on the phone being passed around between sparkies but still no joy.
Can anyone please give me some direction or sound advice as to what i can do to get past this problem. I've been unable to use the camper for nearly two yrs now and beginning to loosw faith.
Jon

Re: 1z conversion immobiliser problem
Hello,
like Matt said - ECU number would be useful here. It sounds like the immobiliser box has been discarded which is a pain. I suspect it's immo2 in which case if you get a key, ignition cowl and immobiliser box you should be able to "reintroduce" the key to the ECU and make it learn the new key.
Depending on the ECU number, you can delete the immo fairly easily - there are places that sell ECUs on the web with the immo deleted, but it is possible to do it yourself.

Re: 1z conversion immobiliser problem
Hello, thanks for replying. I`m just outside Bath on the wiltshire border. I don`t have any pictures of the loom to post at the moment but will try and take some tomorrow evening, although i`m pretty sure there are no black boxes on it. I do have all the numbers from the ecu and they are, above the bar code 0 281 001 308/309, the other long no. is 028 906 021 AF, the date is 29/05/95, there are two no.`s below the date which are 28SA2661 and 1258 0229 and there is also a vw sign with the no.`s 39 before it and 89 after. Hope these might help.
Thanks Jon.
Thanks Jon.

Re: 1z conversion immobiliser problem
Hello,
nice one for getting the numbers - the relevant one is 028906021 AF - known as a "MSA15" ECU - equivalent to a GG suffix ECU. That's software chip revision 308/309. There's a place on ebay which sells ECUs which have had the immo deleted for £100. I'll find the address and send it to you.
I've had a look for immo2 boxes and keys but I Reckon your best bet is to bypass the immobiliser block. There are things called immo emulators. I've never tried one but apparently they work.

Re: 1z conversion immobiliser problem
Thanks for that information, feels like i`m getting somewhere now. I`ll look forward to receiving that address. If I buy an ecu with the immobiliser removed can i then just plug it in and it will start or do I then have to get someone to set it up with the pump and/or anything else around the engine?.
The other option you mentioned, an immo emulator, is it something you plug into the loom at some point and do you know how it compares in cost?.
Sorry if i`m asking stupid questions but vehicle electrics remain a mystery to me at present.
Thanks again Jon.

Re: 1z conversion immobiliser problem
Hi Jon,
have sent you a PM. Those are very good question by the way. The way the immobiliser system actually works is a bit complicated, but essentially the diagnostic wire passes from the ECU through the immo, and if the key isn't present then the fuel supply is cut. If it is present then it all starts fine. You can reprogram the immo chip to make it not make the check to see if the key is there, or you can add an emulator which pretends to be the key. The best way is to reprogram the immo chip.
You've got a 1z - the pump and the actuation of the turbo and associated valves etc is matched to the ECU software number. The pump for example has a "voltage map" which needs to be matched to the ECU. For you a GG or AF suffix ECU will work - they use the same software and voltage maps.
A quick look says an emulator is about £15 but I haven't looked very hard.

Hi, my boss can decode your ecu to immo off. Give him a call on 01209831677 office hours ask for martin. Sure he will be able to help.
Good Luck Dave.
