Duff cigarette lighter & charging my i-phone

Post by D&DCAMPA »

My ciggy lighter socket used to work perfectly well, but after a friend fiddled with my stereo its now defunct!
so at Vanwest last year one of the 80-90 members (think it was James?!) helped fitting one of the double socket/double usb splitter thingys direct to the leisure battery.
Worked a treat charging mine and OH's smart phones but now I have upgraded to an i-phone and I cant get it to charge, and its the same with my i-plod!
like the idea of flexibility of choosing sites that dont have EHU but phone charge doesnt last much past 3 days.... any suggestions kindly welcomed! :roll:

Thanks
Diane :ok

First check the fuse has not blown.
If you are using the USB output socket to charge the phones then the socket may not have enough power they are only normally a maximum 500ma output.

Yep - iphones need at least 1 amp to charge and most of the cig lighter USB devices are not rated that high;

You can get cig lighter USB converters that are rated at 1amp - you just need to check the specs (as most are 500mA) - I think Halfords sell them (they usually cost a little more)

I'd start at the ciggie lighter itself. Have a look behind the dash (or remove it) and check there's still a feed to it physically. It may have fallen off (not good having that swinging around loose behind a metal dash) or your mate's 'borrowed' it to feed the radio because he couldn't find the original.

Have you a multimeter because you're more than likely going to need one; if not for this, for something else in the future?

Mine never worked and it was such a pig to get to the back of it, I gave up and fitted one of the USB/Ciggy extension boxes ALDI sell twice a year. Charges the iphone no problem.
