LHD California 1989 rear wiper - troubleshooting

Post by fizzpault3 »

Hello,

Still going through the 'new' van in astonishment, seeing wires off here, bits added on there, not understanding why a small note hasn't been attached to loose ends simply saying 'live feed from relay 22', etc, it only takes a few seconds to save anyone else working on the van wasting endless time retracing wiring checking if an earth or dead lead, etc. Latest test of my patience is the apparent reluctance of the rear wiper and washer to work. Have checked out the forum and read other posts on the subject, just need a little clarification, if possible. Firstly, have taken steering cowling off and thoroughly cleaned the 'push'forward-rear wash/wipe' switch on the wiper control stalk. Success! Where there was no washer, there is now, so that works. Wiper does not. Had tailgate up, removed panel trim, found the small white 4 way connector half undone, but interestingly, when pushed together, it neatly 'ejects' the spade connectors from their respective housings, preventing electrical connection! Sorted that out by cleaning spades and blades and bending appropriately so that they are locked in place, and now connector functions OK. Have tested for continuity from inside the overhead cupboard through to motor, great. Tried switch - zilch, just washer whirring. Got wife to activate wiper control whilst I measured voltage coming through to rear wiper motor, momentarily gave about 6 volts, then went to zero? Trying to trace back towards source, can see where washer cable descends and both washer and wiper feed travel along upper offisde trim conduit towards front. (yes, checked fuses 12 and 13 in fusebox, OK). Not having an electrical circuit diagram of the California, specifically, is frustrating because in the floor box behind the passenger seat is a relay, with all its wires pulled off and insulating tape round the ends???? Would this be the elusive wiper relay I couldn't find in the main fusebox by steering column? Additionally, talking of fusebox, there is also one under the bed seat but with only one circuit connected - the Propex heater (presumably the original Eberspacher gave up and was removed) Any advice welcome. Sounds well and truly messed with! see this link for the manual with everything you need! https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... ad+bentley" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

whilst you are downloading it though the relay for rear wash wipe is in the main fuse panel by your left knee when driving, it is in position 11 (bottom row of relays second from right)

Hi Hacksaw Bob! Thanks for the download tip, and for confirming location of relay in main fuse box. Will dig it out and check it tomorrow, might even be a case of a little Servisol switch cleaner! cheers, Paul :)
