rear air vents

Post by monkeyboysee »

hi all,

bit of a daft question, but do the black air vent covers for the top rear actually do anything? mine doesn't have any, its just bodywork slats. do i need some, do they affect the airflow etc?

by the way, its a 1981 Aircooled 1600.

cheers

Vans until about 1982 had metal slats, later vans (mostly watercooled) had plastic inserts, presumably as it was cheaper.

If your van has metal slats then that is normal and the way it is supposed to be.

Metal intakes look far nicer in my opinion, wish my van had them.

they allow air flow into the engine , this was great ( and prob why they were fitted) on aircooleds as they had to suck clean air in for cooling - similar to bay windows (T2)

there is very little air flow into these vents when driving - despite what peeps think , proved by various intercooler postions people have tried( not me)

also they have the airfilter intake inthem also for clean air.

also on all engine types water / air / petrol and diesel they allow the engine too cool better when the van is stationary- hot air rising ect
