Temp gauge warning light

Hi,

I've read the excellent resource about the temperature gauge warning light but just wanted a little advice as to what to do next.

I have a 1990 T25, 2.1L Autosleeper. The temperature gauge warning light came on today halfway through a long journey (which I aborted). I swapped out the fan fuse as it says in the manual, but the needle on the gauge itself was only halfway to vertical and, to be honest, I don't think the fan was even on. (We were driving on a dual carriageway and in my experience the fan only cuts in in traffic.)

The light went off once the fuse was changed, but I'm a but unsure of what to do next. I'm headed to France with a new baby in a week or so and don't want to take any risks.

I'm in Worthing, West Sussex.

Any suggestions?

You don't say if you checked the coolant level in the header tank.
The light will flash for a lot of reasons.
Low coolant
poor connection
failing sensor
dirty probes
the controling relay
over heat

Sorry. Yes, I checked the coolant levels. They were fine.

If the levels in the header are ok (not the top up tank) and the gauge is reading dead centre then go to france without worrying

Check the coolant level sensor in the top of the expansion tank as they can get "furred up" over time giving a false reading.

Check/change the temp sensors.

Check all the wiring connections to the sensors as these too get furred up causing the light to flash.

Check to make sure the fan kicks in when it should...if not change the fan switch.

I realise this may read like a Brickwerks sales pitch but if the sensors haven't been changed for a while it may be an idea to change them now for peace of mind.
A T25 with a coolant issue isn't good at the best of times...never mind when in France!
