Oops - dropped screw down petrol filler pipe

Hi Guys,

Whilst trying to remove the old rusty filler neck ring to do some body work I managed to drop one of the little screws that hold it in place into the pipe so it has probably dropped down into the tank. Is that gonna be a problem? Should I drop the tank and drain? Is that necessary?

I can't speak for all models but mine had a filter at the bottom of the filler neck so something like a screw wouldn't find it's way into the tank (late style injection tank with plastic filler neck.)

There is no need to worry about that. The screw will happily sit in the bottom of the tank until the end of time. It isn't going to be picked up in the take off pipe as the suction is not great enough. Definitely not worth dropping the tank for.

Good to know it's not an issue. Although I've been meaning to drop the tank so I can treat the underside of the van with dinitrol so maybe now is as good as time as any. With this damn weather though it's a drag getting any work done as you end up laying in puddles

On tank removal by the way, is it worth assuming all grommets will need replacing and just bite the bullet or would you wait to see the state of them before ordering? I don't want to have the van off the road for too long if possible.

However... if it is in the tank and there is water in there (water sinks to the bottom) it will rust

Will rust? Haha, was rusted already Isn't every nut, bolt and on these girls?

OK will probably bite the bullet and drop the tank seeing as I was going to do it at some stage anyway.

Oh I appreciate the advice Kev in case my response came across wrong.

I suppose I was laughing to myself as to the way it happened. Typically it was the last of three screws that wouldn't come out. The other two came out easily and placed aside. So out comes the impact driver driver. Relief! Came out straight away! Oh bugger, I've just dropped it down the filler pipe!
