Hi
I have recently bought an A reg T25 hightop, we have been to a festival this weekend (up to our armpits in mud) and on the way home I have completely lost 2nd and 3rd gear, I have no problem engaging the other gears just these 2, I am not very mechanically minded and wondered if anybody could tell me if this sounds like a new gear box or something else?
Thanks Mark

Re: Lost 2nd and 3rd gear
if it's a 5 speed then it could be the relay lever inside the box has broken, this reverses the throw for 2nd and 3rd gear - if it's a 4 speed then it's a very strange fault and more likely to be a linkage issue
relay lever replacement is stripdown job at the very least, whilst it's apart might as well rebuild it properly

Re: Lost 2nd and 3rd gear
Hi Aidan
Sorry to bother you but I have since found out the issue I have is the gearbox and I need to get a reconditioned one, I found one on Just Kampers for £1230 with a 12 month warrenty and just wondered if you would know if this seems like a reasonable price?
Many thanks
Mark

Re: Lost 2nd and 3rd gear
Mine constantly alternates which gears it gives us, having lost first and second gear on my very first journey in her (home), we really thought the engine had gone as she obviously just wouldn't start moving... In the end it was a linkage issue and didn't cost much at our local VW saviour. She's going in for a more major overhaul shortly as it's a recurring problem.
If you're not mechanically minded it's worth finding someone locally who is. While forum's are great for many problems, sometimes you really need someone to get their hands dirty on it all to check what's what, or particularly before spending a fortune to get it sorted. And someone who knows old vans too, if they don't then you can end up spending much more than you need to (I've been there too). A recent issue I had on my LT had a lot of suggested solutions on a thread, in fact the real answer was much cheaper and easier than all of them.
Hope you get it sorted without too major an expense.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems but it will p.iss off enough people to make it worth the effort
