2.1 DJ air intake (syncro)

Post by PetenAli »

After going through some deep water in the Lakes last week it made me think that I ought to check the integrity of the air intake from the snorkel downwards. The result was confusing to say the least :?

Looking at VAGCAT it seems that I might have a mix of DJ and DG parts - most of which serve no purpose individually or are downright useless when combined. This is what I found:
Pipe from snorkel to air cleaner - pretty pointless
Image

Above pipe removed and two air ducts which appear to go nowhere (top and bottom right)
Image

View from the rear with light cluster removed

It seems that the original engine might have been a DG (with a snorkel as its a Syncro) and that when the DJ was put in yet more Heinz 57 work was done. There is a straight run from the snorkel to the void infront of the light cluster so I guess that I just need to find a way of connecting this directly to the air cleaner housing? Then I could scrap what VAGCAT calls the "control box" on its DG page. The DJ page on VAGCAT seems to show a direct run from snorkel top to air filter.

Am I right in thinking that all I need is air intake from the snorkel direct to the air cleaner housing and to make sure its water proof?

Thanks,

Pete

First thing I notice is that you are missing the 'cyclone' filter

Thanks Dave.

syncropaddy - isn't the cyclone filter used on the DG engine? Just going by what VAGCAT shows on this page http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2SY/1 ... 49/593682/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (DJ)

as opposed to this page http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2SY/1 ... 49/593726/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (DG)

It looks like the DJ syncro system goes straight through - thats what I'm trying to check.

Thanks guys.

Cheers Dan. I'll give you a bell and call down when its convenient. What exactly does a cyclone filter do that a more usual set up doesn't do?

Thanks again syncropaddy. I seem to have a bit of a dog's breakfast of bits that don't really tie in with anything on VAGCAT, Bentley or Haynes! Another bit that will be fun to get sorted!

Been over to see Dan (Hotpod) this morning. As his 2.1 DJ is out at the moment he's very kindly leant me his cyclone filter. Its not the same as the one that VAGCAT shows but its clearly off a 2.1 DJ . I've just got to give it a good clean and then fit it and then will put some pics up.

Looking at Dan's set up reinforces my idea that my air intake is a mix of DJ and DG. I took some pics of Dan's set up and so will be able to show the comparisons later.

Thanks Hotpod :ok :ok

I think thats another bit sussed now. Here is Dan's cyclone in position in his bus:

Image

This is the view with the rear off side cluster light removed. As you can see there is a lot less pipework than on mine (see first post above). Dan's has a pipe direct from the snorkel down to the cyclone without any control box.

Image

I got the cyclone cleaned up. The part numbers are 025129695 for the cyclone and 025129626A for the hose that connects it to the air filter. I found these eventually on VAGCAT - just no pictures of them on there. This is it fitted to my bus.

Image

The cyclone seems a pretty simple bit of kit and will helpful in dusty conditions - not much chance of dusty conditions down here at the moment!!

Having now realised that there was probably a carbed DG in mine originally I had a closer look and could see lots of taped off wires that now don't do anything. When the engine is out there is going to be another job tidying the wiring in the engine bay.

I also spotted this broken spring which goes from the lever on the throttle valve to the back of the air inlet manifold. It had broken off...

Image

Fortunately I had one in some parts from another engine and so replaced it.

Image

Can anyone tell me what it actually does please?

Finally a BIG thanks to Hotpod for helping me fit another piece of the 2.1 DJ jigsaw that's in my brain! :?

That looks like mine used to look like but the cyclone should be more vertical. There is a second pipe there behind the rear light which I dont remember being on mine.
