similar fitted to my van. Works ok, but i had to adjust and lubricate everything becouse at first the were to weak to pull the locks.

Similar to those found on ebay. Yep they work but all universal kits require fettling.

I used a Maplin kit a few years back on an mgb. I found it to be weak and began to fail within a year. I recently fitted a Hawk kit on my van. Much stronger and better value, can't speak for longevity yet but so far so good :]

maybe a dumb question but will these also control the tailgate?

Yes if you run the wires back and drill a hole in the lock mechanism for the actuating rod.
I ran several of these generic kits, all suffered from early failure of the ECU.

I ended up retrofitting the OEM stuff.
